Manchester United opened up a 9 point lead at the top of the Premier League thanks to a hard fought victory versus Fulham at Craven Cottage (and City drawing with Liverpool).
United recalled Antonio Valencia and Nani to the wings and Thomas Cleverley came back into midfield to partner Michael Carrick. Nemanja Vidic was rested with the game v Everton in mind (expecting a an aerial battle).
The game got off to a frantic start, both teams forcing good saves from the respective keepers as well striking the woodwork. The game was decided with just over 10 minutes to go, Wayne Rooney who was a threat all game calmly finding the corner as he strode into the Fulham area.
The Reds withstood the late Fulham pressure to put themselves in a brilliant position with 13 games to go.

Manchester United took full advantage of rival Citys’ dropped points with a hard working 3 points against a spirited and lively Southampton side.
United made their customary start it woul seem this season by allowing the opposition a 1 goal lead, even handing it to them on a plate as a poor back pass allowed the Saints to score within 2 minutes. The Reds didn’t waste much time to level thanks to a superb pass from Shinji Kagawa and a calm Rooney finish. Rooney scored again thanks to a brilliant assist by Patrice Evra and went into the 2nd half looking to kill off the game. The 3rd goal never came and Southampton to their full credit pushed for an equaliser that United managed to avoid.
“Champions win games when playing badly” Yup, it was one of those.
Still, there were plenty of United highlights, here are my GIFs of the game…

Ryan Giggs gave a timely reminder of the ability he still has in the FA Cup tie with West Ham United which the Reds won 1-0 to progress to the 4th Round. A constant threat via some brilliant passing and some direct dribbling we have seen many times before, he was named MOTM on the night.

The clean sheet would be a real boost for the Reds, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have brilliant games at centre back. Wayne Rooney marked his return with the only goal and Ryan Giggs turned back the clocks to be the stand out player from both teams throughout.

It was vital that United built on the great work of their win over City and with the nearest rivals winning earlier in the day, the Reds knew what they needed to do.
They started brilliantly, with the central midfield duo of Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley playing neat passing football and all the attackers looking dangerous with every attack.
United took the opportunity at 3-0 to give Nemanja Vidic a run out on his return from injury which was great to see, and ensured he was fully tested by bringing on Giggs and Scholes to protect from the middle (!).
