Manchester United took full advantage of rival Citys’ dropped points with a hard working 3 points against a spirited and lively Southampton side.
United made their customary start it woul seem this season by allowing the opposition a 1 goal lead, even handing it to them on a plate as a poor back pass allowed the Saints to score within 2 minutes. The Reds didn’t waste much time to level thanks to a superb pass from Shinji Kagawa and a calm Rooney finish. Rooney scored again thanks to a brilliant assist by Patrice Evra and went into the 2nd half looking to kill off the game. The 3rd goal never came and Southampton to their full credit pushed for an equaliser that United managed to avoid.
“Champions win games when playing badly” Yup, it was one of those.
Still, there were plenty of United highlights, here are my GIFs of the game…
Manchester United 2 Liverpool 1. Beautiful result to seal a double over Liverpool this season and keep their 7 point lead at the top of the Premier League intact.
United recalled Danny Welbeck to the starting line up, a decision that paid off as he was named MOTM by Sky’s Gary Neville.
The Reds domianted the first half with the very promising midfield trio of Carrick, Cleverley and Kagawa playing some neat football, liking well with Welbeck and Van Persie to create enough chances to have the home crowd wondering how it was only 1-0 at HT.
A second did come, and despite Liverpool having the better of the 2nd half, United’s defence, leaky this season, held firm to see the Reds home.
Manchester United again came from behind to salvage a draw at West Ham in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup thanks to some injury time magic.
United will be in the hat for next round draw but will need to see off West Ham at the second attempt in the replay next week.
The Reds rested some key players and started with the diamond formation seen a few times this season. It helped United start really well, with Scholes, Cleverley, Kagawa, and the pushed forward Rafael played some neat passing football.
Disappointingly for United, once ahead they allowed West Ham to get back into the game and the home side pushed on. There were not many chances for United to draw level into a few moments of pure genius rescued the game.
Manchester United completed their busy festive period with a 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic to maintain their 7 point lead at the top of the table.
United, on the back of their clean sheet victory over West Brom, started the game professionally looking to stay tight and not concede the first goal as they have many times this season. When the time was right, they up their game and scored 2 quick goals before half time to put themselves in full control. 2 further goals followed as well as a much welcome successive clean sheet.
There were plenty of moments to enjoy, and this could well be my busiest post. Here are my top 5 GIF moments from the game…
So as 2012 comes to close, we all like to look back at the year for our favourite moments.
In general, it was a year to forget – losing the title to City in the dying seconds and watching Chelsea lift the European Cup – but as the year ends, United sit top of the table with a nice 7 point lead and a real optimism around the club that 2013 could end with silverware.
To help celebrate the year, and to remember why we love this club so very very much, here are some of the highlights of 2012…
Manchester United faced off against a CFR Cluj side who were still in with a chance of qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The Reds, already qualified as Group winners, took the chance to rest several key players ahead of the weekends Derby, and the performance was very much that off a game that did not matter. United played well in spurts but never really dominated the game and testing the Cluj defence and ended up losing to a wondergoal.
There were several great gmoments to enjoy in defeat, here are my Top 5 GIF moments…
Manchester United overcome yet another poor start to a game to win 3 points and remain top of the league.
United continued their recent trend of conceding the first goal, but reacted quickly (and with good impacts of the subs bench) to score 3 goals, and ensure victory.
Darren Fletcher got his first League start of the campaign, and got himself on the score sheet too, in what was one of feel good moments of the season so far.
United were at slow pace for the first half and it was not until a goal down and the introduction of Javier Hernandez and Anderson that United started to play with more directness and pace to their attacks. Its like this we see United at their best.
There were lots of great moments throughout, here are my Top 5 GIFs of the game…
With qualification to the next round of the Champions League already achieved, Manchester United took the opportunity to rest several key players, give the fringe players a start and let some of our youngsters experience what is widely regarded as one the most intimidating atmospheres in European football – Galatasaray away.
United lost 1-0, but will take comfort from the performance against a volatile crowd and a Galatasaray team knowing they had to win to keep their own qualification hopes alive.
Nick Powell made his first European start for the Reds, and despite a nervy start and some misplaced places didn’t look out of place. He played his game, wanted the ball and made clever runs and passes in his time on the pitch.
There were other bright moments too, the return of Phil Jones, and the efforts shown by Cleverley, Welbeck and Co on a tough night, away in Europe.
Despite the loss, United did have some good moments, here are my Top 5 GIFs from the game…
