So as 2012 comes to close, we all like to look back at the year for our favourite moments.
In general, it was a year to forget – losing the title to City in the dying seconds and watching Chelsea lift the European Cup – but as the year ends, United sit top of the table with a nice 7 point lead and a real optimism around the club that 2013 could end with silverware.
To help celebrate the year, and to remember why we love this club so very very much, here are some of the highlights of 2012…
1. Man City 2 – 3 Manchester United (FA Cup) – 8th January
After the embarrassment of the 1-6 defeat earlier in the season, United headed to the Etihad in need of a confidence boosting result. The day started in spectacular fashion as the retired Paul Scholes was named on the subs bench and continued to get better as United raced into a 3-0 lead – This Danny Welbeck goal a highlight.
2. David de Gea save v Chelsea – 5th February
David de Gea produced this top class save from a late Juan Mata free kick to help United earn the draw and at the same time silence a few critics and use its a base to go on and show his best form since his summer move.
United had come back from 3-0 down at Stamford Bridge to draw 3-3, Javier Hernandez with the late leveler.
3. Patrice Evra ‘release’ v Liverpool – 11th February
After 4 months of built up emotions in regards to the Suarez racism case, Patrice Evra whether rightly or wrongly released all his emotions with a dance of delight in front of the Stretford End after the Reds 2-1 win over Liverpool.
4. Ryan Giggs goal v Norwich – 26th February
On his 900th game for Manchester United, the script was already written that it would be Ryan Giggs to stroke home the last minute winner in a 2-1 win over Norwich City.
5. Antonio Valencia goal v Blackburn Rovers – 2nd April
A goal that had looked to give United the edge in the title race. Valencia smashed home this late goal to rapturous celebrations as United went 5 points clear.
6. Robin van Persie goal v Fulham – 25th August
Not only was it a spectacular goal, but it was his first for his new club on his Old Trafford debut and the first sign of the amazing impact he would make on Manchester United in 2012, and for many years after im sure.
7. Robin van Persie hat-trick v Southampton – 2nd September
The Dutchman’s brilliant start to his United career continued with this match winning hat trick to nick United all 3 points in this tough away fixture at Southampton. His first was clinical, his second was that of a poacher, and the winner, in stoppage time was top draw.
8. Rafael goal v Liverpool. United win at Anfield – 23rd September
United were 1-0 down Anfield when Rafael scored this wonderful goal. Beautiful chest pass by Shinji Kagawa is brought down and bent into the top corner by Rafael da Silva.
Robin van Persie scored the winner from the spot.
9. Aston Villa 2 – 3 Manchester United – 10th November
The Reds came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Aston Villa thanks to a brilliant hat-trick from Javier Hernandez. The winner coming with minutes to play.
10. Man City 2 – 3 Manchester United – 9th December
United released a few demons from the previous season with a brilliant 3-2 win away at Manchester City to open up a gap at the top of the table. Wayne Rooney scored twice (One and Two) before City hit back only for Van Persie to win it in injury time.
So there are 10 reasons why we love this club and here are to many more in the new year.
