With qualification to the next round of the Champions League already achieved, Manchester United took the opportunity to rest several key players, give the fringe players a start and let some of our youngsters experience what is widely regarded as one the most intimidating atmospheres in European football – Galatasaray away.
United lost 1-0, but will take comfort from the performance against a volatile crowd and a Galatasaray team knowing they had to win to keep their own qualification hopes alive.
Nick Powell made his first European start for the Reds, and despite a nervy start and some misplaced places didn’t look out of place. He played his game, wanted the ball and made clever runs and passes in his time on the pitch.
There were other bright moments too, the return of Phil Jones, and the efforts shown by Cleverley, Welbeck and Co on a tough night, away in Europe.
Despite the loss, United did have some good moments, here are my Top 5 GIFs from the game…
1. Nick Powell pass
As I mentioned at the start, it was a really promising display by the youngster showing that he has the ability and temperament to become a first team regular If he does, I look forward to seeing more delightful outside of the boot passes like this one.
2. Darren Fletcher skill pass
More game time for Fletcher has he continues his return from illness. His role this season has mainly been that off defensive screen in CM but this little skill pass shows that he still has plenty more to offer.
3. Danny Welbeck play
Another hard working 90 minutes, full of running, energy and moments of brilliant technique from Danny Welbeck. This beautiful little turn, followed by some nice feet and lay off, was a particular highlight for me.
4. Anderson turn
In what has become a regular occurrence over the last month or so, Anderson reminded us all that he is Brazilian and has plenty of skill up his sleeve. Here he shows great skill to turn a defender before stepping past another before eventually being tackled.
5. Javier Hernandez run
There was little action in front of goal for the United strikers, but both put in hard working shifts and tried their best to make things happen. This moment shows Hernandez start an attack with a nice turn to get away from his defender before driving at their defense A nice piece of skill gets him past another before knocking the ball out wide for Josh King to cross.
