EL 08/03/12 Manchester United v Athletic Bilbao

Another disappointing home european tie saw United escape with only a 3-2 loss in a game where the visitors rightly took all the plaudits. Bilbao played superbly whilst United struggled to get any sort of control in the game. Despite this United did stay alive in the tie and produced a few moments of class that are well worth seeing again.

1. Ryan Giggs still produces class

The first moment was inside the first few minutes when he he was put in on goal only for the keeper to block his shot. He got to the rebound first and produced a classy little backheel that megged the defender for Ji Sung Park to continue the attack.

The second was a lovely passage of play from Giggs. First a little flick and then when he got back on the ball, beat his man and played a beautiful ball to Hernandez with the outside of his boot.

2. Nice passing move

Lovely little touch from Rooney to Rafael who find Jones first time, he in turn plays in Rooney on the wing. Rooney hits a nice deep cross towards Heranandez which is claimed by some good goalkeeping.

3. More passing, Rooney touch

Another example of the counter attacking style United were made to play in the game.
Nice hold up play by Rooney, followed by a quick interchange between Giggs and Park. Park knocks a ball out to Rooney whos first touch is immense and takes him past the defender. Hernandez was just unable to get onto Rooneys cross.

4. The obligatory David De Gea save

Yet again, Dave features on the blog with another brilliant save from the outstanding Iker Muniain. He was our best player on the night and the final replay shows how good a save it was.

5. Dave Saves once more

Another great save from De Gea only minutes after the previous one. He kept United in this tie with several other saves during the game. His confidence is high and its clear to see.
Was also nice to see him shouting at his defence at times showing how he is growing into this team.

  1. Chicha

Beautiful stuff once again mate…so disappointed with the result though, United were completely out-passed, Bilbao had 11 shots on target, and 61% POSSESSION 2nd half, AT Old Trafford !?

It would have been 5-2 if not for De Gea. Just a thought, but I enjoy it most when you have sort of a compilation of De Gea saves, keep it coming though looks great !
